Surin is world-famous for the Elephant Roundup and for its many Khmer sanctuaries and wide variety of handicrafts.
Surin is 457 kilometres from Bangkok and has an area of 8,124 square kilometres. It is divided into the following districts: Muang, Chumphon Buri, Tha Tum, Chom Phra, Prasat, Kap Choeng, Rattanaburi, Sanom, Si Khoraphum, Sangkha, Samrong Thap, Buachet, Lamduan, Si Narong, Phanom Dong Rak, Khwao Sinarin and Non Narai.
Surin Elephant Show is held in the third weekend of November. Internationally famous, this annual event brings crowds of visitors to the provincial capital of Surin, where over 100 trained elephants are assembled. Among the spectacular features are wild elephant hunts, tugs of war, demonstrations of log hauling skills, and a parade of elephants outfitted for medieval warfare. |

Surin's geographical and natural features enhance cultural amalgamation here for thousands of years. It once lied on the route linking the various kingdoms in this region, notably Lao's Champasak and the Khmer Empire. The Kui people, attracted by the abundance of wild elephants here, added particularly colorful culture to the province. Surin today is charmed with splendorous Khmer ruins, peculiar with its Cambodian-influenced culture, and renowned for its highest number of domesticated elephants.
| Is the traditional heart of Phuket's Muslim community. As you pass through this picturesque village strung out along the highway you will see the Ban Thao Mosque. This impressive and ornate structure is the largest mosque on the island. Visitors are allowed and discrete photos may be taken, but care should be exercised and avoid going on Fridays the Muslim holy day. The village offers several roadside markets that offer up delicious Muslim food and fruit picked fresh from the many nearby orchards. When ordering food or buying fruit you may have to resort to "point and smile technique", because English is for the most part only spoken by the younger generation. At the traffic light you can continue straight to the Heroines Monument and the main road to Phuket Town or turn left onto highway 4020 and continue your tour of the northern beaches. |
